Just a screenshot of a new layout that has been made directly available as of today:

2018-05-04

BTW: Would be nice if all coloured labels in the Matchboard would have the same width .

I've been testing that one too today (and the other one)... May 4, 2018

However, I still wish Igor would also offer an option where the editing pane is actually integrated in the grid, like in memoQ/DVX/Studio/memsource, etc. I still think that this would save a lot of space, and that it is more user friendly.

In CafeTran, you have to look back and forth too much between the grid (macro level) and the src+trgt boxes (micro level).

Michael

If I remember correctly, this would require rewriting CT for the greatest part.

Another useful view would be a distraction-free proofread view:

The MT labels have the same percentage width but you squeezed the Matchboard a bit too narrowly, possibly because of a smaller laptop screen. Expect some polishing for smaller screens. Thanks!

Editing pane in the grid was my wish when translating my first segment... May 31, 2018

I was excited about CafeTran but am not using it at all, because I find it quite user unfriendly and not very intuitive. I never needed any Tutorial to start translating in mQ or Studio, importing an existing TM. In CafeTran, it took me ages to understand how to do basic stuff.

But if at least this one feature was available - editing pane in grid - I’d give it a try again. On a 13" or 14" screen, you don’t want to waste space!

Hello Nicolas,

It is now, see View > Windows layout > Layout 6 Compact after applying the latest update (CafeTran Espresso 2018 Akua Update 8).

The announcement is here: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/discussions/topics/6000054281

---

Also, I won't comment on tackling a new CAT tool head on without taking the time to learn the basic stuff first (I'll only say that many help requests for various CAT tools here on ProZ stem from colleagues that seem to take that approach).

Let me just add there is an official knowledge base with succinct and to the point information each time on a specific topic: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/solutions

I've also devised some reference files myself. You can use them just for that (reference) when you want to figure out what a specific preference or menu item does, tackle specific file formats, etc.

They are available here: https://github.com/idimitriadis0/TheCafeTranFiles/wiki

Note: The files are updated every two-three months or so. They presently lag two version updates. You'll find the missing information in the latest updates announcements, at the official CafeTran Espresso forum: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/discussions

Jean

PS: In Preferences > Appearance, I generally uncheck the Large icons on smaller screens. You can also tweak the font and font size used in various UI elements to fit your needs (View > Fonts).

CT now offers a view where you can edit directly in the centre of the grid:

https://www.proz.com/forum/cafetran_support/325465-cafetran_just_got_a_little_more_mainstream_editing_directly_in_the_translation_grid.html

(There is currently a discussion going on about the optimal position of the toolbars in this view — centre or top — and of the status indicator of the currently-edited segment: centre or top.)

BTW: You don’t have to import any TM. You can just start using any TMX file. How is that for user friendliness?

Found it! May 31, 2018

Thanks Jean and Hans.

It might not be much for many users, but CT is now a lot more appealing to me.

And after unchecking a few appearance options, other things seem also suddenly a lot clearer.
(Maybe improvements made between my last version - mid-2017 - and now also play a role.

I should find time in the next weeks to look closer at CT.

Cheers,
Nicolas

It took me a while to find out!
I guess one’s technical mind gets deeply conditioned by what it experienced previously.

This makes things easier, indeed, especially with language variants I suppose.

Exactly that: we are all preconditioned (and individuals) May 31, 2018

Yes, CT does some things differently. But times, they are changing.

This makes things easier, indeed, especially with language variants I suppose.

Not only that. It also ensures that no TM databases or term bases can get corrupted. You always keep access to all important resources.
