Zaštitni sloj je sloj koji se ugrađuje na ravnik posteljice, ispod zastorne prizme, materijal je drobljena kamena mješavina uglatog oblika zrna (ne koristiti materijale zaobljenog zrna, npr. riječni šljunak), najmanje debljine 40 cm koji ima višestruku ulogu i mora zadovoljiti:
Početna zasijecanja treba izvesti najviše do ravnika posteljice projektiranog kolosijeka ispod zaštitnog sloja odnosno do gornje linije ojačanog nasipa.
Ravnik posteljice u dvostrešnom je nagibu od 5% dok zahtijevani modul stišljivosti Ms ispitan kružnom pločom (ploča promjera Ø30,0 cm prema HRN U.B1.046/68 ili jednakovrijedno) mora biti najmanje 40 MN/m2.
Pod posteljicu se ne podrazumijeva samo površina (ravnik) već i sloj dubine 30 do 50 cm, čija se geomehanička obilježja i obilježja nosivosti uzimaju u obzir prilikom projektiranja gornjeg ustroja.
