disagree  Robert Brukner: Loch is Czech, derived from German "luk" or "loch", meaning a hole and is used in Czech to denote a medieval cellar or interconnected cellar network

sandstone catacombs

Explanation:
Apparently Odessa is built upon three layers of sandstone catacombs http://www.visitukraine.com.ua/ukraine.php , and there are also references to them here in the UK http://www.parksandgardens.ac.uk/component/option,com_parksa... or http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm20000...

-> thanks - the vast majority of these catacombs, cellars, undercrofts, basements - call them what you will - are of sandstone simply because that is the easiest stone to work

-> Ďakujem Mária! To som mal tiež na mysli. Poznám aj hajlochy

disagree  Robert Brukner: Repository is one possible function. But loch is more about form. It is not a hole or a pit.
