I'll choose this for the wealth of supporting links, but I have to say that my audience is the World Bank, the subject is an allocation fund, and so I don't think the one judging whether to give money or not will know that term, so I'll put Maria's "passageways" in parenthesis behind it, for clarity's sake. I also was tempted to apply KISS and write staircases, lifts and escalators, but it's hard to argue with Sarka's entry, it's on the money. Thanks to all for a healthy, eye-opening debate! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
thanks, it is not from my head, but from MWD one of many def. exctl. # 4 (system of communicating) 4a .... and I must say MWD sholud be a " Bible " for all of us (not from my head...if it's not in we should not use it and vs...). Hannah's www is interesting too.
@ Maria: that is a very interesting link you've got (NYC), but please tell me where you got your definition of communication in that military sense. In my four years in the army and throughout my six-month deployment in Gulf War I, I never, ever, heard that word in that context...And we did a lot of moving... we called them corridors, routes, etc. but not communications, I do note that the Slovak word komunikacie is there, automatically degrading the "grass roots English" veracity because it seems to be a dictionary entry. @ Hana: also a very interesting link, but let's be frank, we in USA (viz Maria's link) just don't use that word that way, I called my British friend Dave who is somewhat involved in these things, and he was quick to call it Czenglish...now what?
therefore I would avoid using the word "communication" in this context both in Slovak and English. I kind of prefer "common sense" solutions to artificially made terms (no offence, please, anyone:))) In my opinion the words "ways, passages, circulation, route" are not unequivocal in this context either - no offence, please, again:))))))))
I agree with you Iva, but just because it's used doesn't make it right...having looked at its etymology (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=communication&sea... I believe that it is a cognate but also a false friend, and should be forever abandoned by the conscientious translator. The word has given me fits for years. It's like so many people write informations, well, it must exist, but alas, it doesn't.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_friend
"komunikace" in Czech or "komunikácie" in Slovak are commonly used to denote roads - strange but true:)))) It sounds awkward in Slovak too, but they keep on using it especially in technical texts or when someone wants to sound as an expert. Well, you can hear it quite often when listening to the radio or TV.
well, now that that's over... where did this word communication come to mean roadways and walkways? It is not the correct word, all of my technical dictionaries show, in terms of the meaning "dopravni", road, route, way"...I agree this is a false friend:
no mention whatsoever to it having the form of a conduit for physical transportation, aside from the links that Hanna provided...but for example sirohe.com cleverly doesn't state its country of origin, but it isn't England, Ireland, Canada, USA, etc...it does have Spanish as the other language...
I thought that my explanation is clear. I meant people, of course. Both architectural terms mean the same - how people move up and down in a building or things are moved in a building.
as well as vertikální komunikace are technitectural terms used in architecture. Both mean the same - to get up and down in a building. That's all... To your next remark. Please read the Kudoz rules.

Explanation: Your structural typology is very clear: the structure of wall of load delimits the perimeter of the building, along which forms up the vertical communication. Difficult result, still in our days it find a more clear example of symbiosis constructs, closing, vertical communication. The tower of Hercules, clear example of structure of perimetral walls on those who lean to him the vertical communication. This so overt report was used by Giannini in your restoration of the XVIII century with motives even symbolic, with the molding by following the ramp ( see right ) http://www.sirohe.com/articles/perimetral_structure_comunica...

also used in plural
The building has the following structure. Initially, only the framework of the building is built; it consists of three bearings containing all vertical communications http://www.evolo.us/competition/vertical-street-city-2/

All shared functions such as vertical communication, technical services and wet cores are placed in intermediate towers, detached from the working areas. The towers are designed as closed massive monoliths, where the program that does not need daylight or views is located. http://www.e-architect.co.uk/norway/it_fornebu_oslo.htm

Vertikální komunikace Výtahy Všechny vertikální komunikační cesty byly umístěny vně základního půdorysu budovy. Nalezneme zde 4 výtahy pro dopravu zaměstnanců (o celkové kapacitě 100 míst), které byly obsluhovány průvodčími. V severozápadních partiích budovy se nachází nákladní výtah s kovovou klecí. http://cs.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Baťův_mrakodrap&ac... \o "Editace sekce: Výtahy

Explanation: I would say that this is exactly what "vertikální komunikace" in a building comprise. I would check it with the author of the text and get his/her approval. Another good example is "přístupová komunikace" - meaning a service road.
Explanation: in your text is - "a k nim přidružene vertikalni komunikace" ..., no specification just in general
vertical passageway - a way allowing passage, especially a corridor, but passageway - is not only a corridor, lane, entrance, lobby and more... (horizontalna komunikacia) ale aj exits such as stairway (interior, exterior), elevator, egress (vertik. k.) more at: www.nyc.gov/html/dob/downloads/pdf/means_of_egress_presenta...
a) communication - komunikacie - a system of routes for moving troops, supplies and vehicles,... nothing wrong with word
It is "interesting transformation" for word komunikacie > circulation/ cirkulacia (vzduchu, krvi, penazi).
