No, ja neviem. Preco by tam autor ten spolek inak spominal (mimochodom, zemericstvi je celkom pravdepodobny vyklad, tiez ma to napadlo)?

Cukrárnu Myšák by som rozhodne neprekladal, pretože sa volala sa podľa majiteľa, takže názov o činnosi podniku nič nevypovedal.

Názov spolku (pokiaľ ide o spolek) o činnosti vypovedá. Samozrejme, cesky nazov sa moze (IMO by sa mal) ponechat, ale s anglickym prekladom v zatvorke alebo poznamke.

Dovolim si upozornit na hlavičku otázky, má to byť názov spolku z 19. storocia. Cize nejde o to prelozit slová loket a provazec, ale prelozit ich tak, aby sa z nich dal skombinovat nazov. Tie informácie o dĺžke IMO patria skôr do poznámky (mozno spolu s anglickým prekladom slov)

I can accept the argument of “unnecessary German” in a modern context – after all, since 1989 we have moved away from the use, in English, of German names for Czech towns and rivers. However, in the context of the 19th century, at a time when Germans, Jews and others now departed were very much part of the Bohemian fabric, I just find this rather revisionist. If you were translating a 19th-century text that mentioned, say, the Vltava, it would be appropriate, in the spirit of the time and for the sake of “authenticity”, to translate it as the Moldau. English texts on Bohemia at the time are littered with Germanisms.

If the translation is of an authentic 19th-century text, I think use of the German equivalent would give a more natural, flowing feel on the grounds that a) English embraces the Germanic much more readily than the Slavonic and b) I just have a feeling this avenue would be followed by a 19th century translator. If the translation is a modern text about the 19th century, then your solution would clearly work.

Hannah, 1) my point is that they translated the word Elle (not loket) into English. 2) Landseil appears to be very much Bohemian, not Austrian. 3) I wouldn't worry so much about whether it's a cubit or an ell, I'd concentrate more on finding an English equivalent of provazec/Landseil if you want to make it easier on the reader's eyes. Provazec/Landseil juxtaposed with cubit is going to look rather jarring.

See The Merchant's Assistant, Or, Merchantile Instructer… (1834) on Google Books – quite fascinating. They translate words where there is a reasonable equivalent (“ells of Prague”, p. 251) but are quite happy to leave non-translatable units of measurement and geographical place names in their original language (i.e. for Bohemia they use German). So I’d stick to Landseil and Ell(e) as these are “Bohemian” words which would have been used in administration in certain areas.

In this context, definitely (though I can imagine the "Elle" becoming "Ell" by association - see my own answer). As far as I can make out it's a Bohemian (i.e. regionally defined) unit of measurement, so historically the English would borrow from the German. The length of a cubit/ell will differ from country to country (just as, historically, an English mile is different from a US mile), so it's best to specify the region, and as far as I can make out there is no direct English equivalent of provazec. http://www.sizes.com/units/landseil.htm
