(Ik denk dat er nog zat andere mogelijkheden voor 'rub shoulders' zijn te bedenken, insclusief Rons 'gaat hand in hand') Ik heb lang nagedacht over hoe ik 'new' en 'old' zou vertalen. very new - allermodernst (in die tijd: tram-cars, telephones, daily papers - 'objectieve informatie, producten van de wetenschap'), allernieuwst immeasurably old: allerprimitiefste dingen uit ver vervlogen tijden de meest primitieve praktijken het totaal verouderde maar het mist het bondige / minder expliciete van de brontekst verderop wordt vanzelf wel duidelijk wat met 'nieuw' (nl. modern) en 'oud' (nl. primitief) wordt bedoeld door met 'nieuw' en 'oud' te vertalen behoud je het frisse / krachtige / bondige van de tegenstelling ik heb het verhaal gedeeltelijk gelezen en dit is mijn indruk: 'very new' and 'immeasurably old' heeft betrekking op de culturen / cultuur: meer in het bijzonder gaat het om de tegenstelling 'moderne wetenschap / modern' en 'primitieve voodooachtige praktijken / primitief' "If I have dwelt on the incongruity of Honolulu, it is because just this, to my mind, gives its point to the story I want to tell. In the same way there are certain places, surrounded by a halo of *romance*, to which the inevitable disillusionment which you must experience on seeing them gives a singular spice.
