English to Dutch translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Poetry & Literature / Satirische roman.
English term or phrase:the worthiest of development
Aside from its obvious efficiency, this system was in keeping with the second of Master Burlingame`s three principles of pedagogy: to wit, that one learns a thing best by teaching it. The first was that of the three usual motives for learning things - necessity, ambition, and curiosity -- simple curiosity was the worthiest of development, it being the "purest" (in that value of what it drives us to learn is terminal rather than instrumental), the most conducive to exhaustive and continuing rather than cursory or limited study, and the likeliest to render pleasant the labour of learning.

(trivia: detailed facts about history, sport, famous people etc.)
Are you curious about why you learn more effectively when you’re curious about a subject? The chances are you’ll remember the research findings you’re about to read about.
.... even if that information is not of particular interest or importance.
Ben je klaar mee.
Attention in its active form is therefore inseparable from probing; it is essentially, in its purity, an act of questioning. This act is the privilige of our human existence. An animal contents itself with being. The responsibility of man is to question himself on the meaning of his being.
terminal 1) a: of or relating to an end, extremity, boundary, or terminus - a terminal pillar b: growing at the end of a branch or stem - a terminal bud 2) a: of, relating to, or occurring in a term or each term - terminal payments b1: leading ultimately to death : fatal - terminal cancer b2: approaching or close to death : being in the final stages of a fatal disease - a terminal patient b3: of or relating to patients with a terminal illness - terminal care c: extremely or hopelessly severe - terminal boredom 3) a : occurring at or constituting the end of a period or series : concluding - the terminal moments of life b : not intended as preparation for further academic work - a terminal curriculum

I'm so sorry. "... in that the value of what it drives to learn is terminal rather than instrumental.
Volgens mij, maar dat is dus wel een gok, ontbreekt het woord "the" voor "value": (...) in that the value of what drives us to learn is terminal rather than instrumental." Anders klopt die zin niet.
- simple curiosity was the worthiest of development, it being the "purest" (in that value of what it drives us to learn is terminal rather than instrumental)
The author concludes that in order to excite a student to perform more actively in his reading, teachers must encourage curiosity in the student, rather than overstressing his ability to make sophisticated judgments.
Fourth, we need to widen students' reading experience by having them read more and criticize less, by encouraging curiosity rather than fostering opinions, by broadening interest instead of narrowing their focus to sophisticated judgments.
What is necessary, is to foster the motive of curiosity , as opposed to necessity or ambition, because, as John Barth suggests in The Sod-Weed Factor, simple curiosity is the worthiest of development ....
...in that value of what it drives us to learn is terminal rather than instrumental
The task for participants in the survey is to arrange the 18 terminal values, followed by the 18 instrumental values, into an order "of importance to YOU, as guiding principles in YOUR life" (Rokeach, 1973, p. 27). The Rokeach Value Survey has been extensively used in empirical work by psychologists, sociologists and marketers.[3] There have been a number of attempts to reduce the 18 instrumental values and 18 terminal values into a set of underlying factors (see for example Feather and Peay, 1975; Johnston, 1995) but without consistent success.
...in that value of what it drives us to learn is terminal rather than instrumental
The Rokeach Value Survey (RVS) is a classification system of values. Developed by social psychologist Milton Rokeach, the system consists of two sets of values, 18 individual value items in each. One set is called terminal values the other instrumental values.
Terminal Values refer to desirable end-states of existence. These are the goals that a person would like to achieve during his or her lifetime. These values vary among different groups of people in different cultures. The terminal values in RVS are: 1.True Friendship 2.Mature Love 3.Self-Respect etc.
Instrumental Values refer to preferable modes of behavior. These are preferable modes of behavior, or means of achieving the terminal values.
The Instrumental Values are: 1.Cheerfulness 2.Ambition 3.Love 4.Cleanliness etc.
Enz enz.
The first was that of the three usual motives for learning things - necessity, ambition, and curiosity -- simple curiosity was the worthiest of development, it being the "purest" (in that value of what it drives us to learn is terminal rather than instrumental),
.. was the worthiest of development -->
more worthy than necessity or ambition for development
in that value of what it drives us to learn is terminal rather than instrumental
