English term or phrase: wet-laid nonwovens
My context is a patent application, en>nl.

General info:

"Abstract: Wet laying is an emerging technique for the production of nonwoven using short natural cellulosic fibers and their blends unlike other nonwoven techniques that utilize chemicals and require a particular length of fibers for processing into nonwoven. The steps involved in wet laying are dispersion, deposition, and consolidation. Uniform dispersion is the key to attain defect-free nonwovens in web laying. It is similar to that of papermaking process with the difference in fiber length and density of the fibers in the process. The quality of the dispersion depends on material parameters such as fiber length, surfactant, nature of fibers, and linear density of the fibers and machine parameters such as dispersion time and mechanical agitation. The present paper summarizes the material and process parameters required for wet laying in detail along with the potential application of wet-laid nonwovens." Oddly, eur-lex.europa.eu consistently translates "wet laid fibre material" as "vergévezelmaterialen". See e.g.:

The decision therefore concludes that the relevant geographic market for wet laid fibre material for tea and coffee filtration is global. [eur-lex.europa.eu]
=
In de beschikking concludeert de Commissie derhalve dat de relevante geografische markt voor vergévezelmaterialen voor thee- en koffiefilters wereldwijd is. [eur-lex.europa.eu]

However, apart from them, I can find ZERO hits online for anything resembling "vergévezelmaterialen", "vergévezel", etc.

A few things I have come across in my googling:

• nat neergelegde vlies (???)
• nat gelegd niet-geweven stof (???)
• vergévezelmaterialen (???)
• Nassvliesstoffe (German)
• natvliezen (???)

I suspect I am going to have to leave this untranslated.

of
- met de 'papiermethode' gevormde non-wovens

- papiermethode - between quotation marks, since similar not identical

Again:

Doing English to Dutch translations nowadays? :-)

Er is inderdaad een redelijke kans dat er ook geen gezaghebbende vertalingen bestaan voor 'spunbond', 'meltblown' en 'flashspun'.

Please note that the correct spelling of ‘spunbond’ vliezen, ‘meltblown’ vliezen, ‘flashspun’ vliezen en ‘wet-laid’ vliezen would be ‘spunbond’-vliezen, ‘meltblown’-vliezen, ‘flashspun’-vliezen en ‘wet-laid’-vliezen.

That is to say, use a hyphen.

1. SPUN BONDING PROCESS:

Spun bonding is one of the most popular methods of producing polymer-laid nonwovens. This process is based on the melt spinning technique. The melt is forced by spin pumps through a spinneret having a large number of holes. The quench air ducts, located below the spinneret block, continuously supply the conditioned air to cool the filaments. There is also a continuous supply of auxiliary room temperature air. Over the line's entire working width, ventilator generated under-pressure sucks the filaments and mixed air down from the spinnerets and cooling chambers.

Spunlaid nonwovens

Spunlaid, also called spunbond, nonwovens are made in one continuous process. Fibers are spun and then directly dispersed into a web by deflectors or can be directed with air streams. This technique leads to faster belt speeds, and cheaper costs. Several variants of this concept are available, such as the REICOFIL machinery.[6] PP spunbonds run faster and at lower temperatures than PET spunbonds, mostly due to the difference in melting points

Spunbond has been combined with melt-blown nonwovens, conforming them into a layered product called SMS (spun-melt-spun). Melt-blown nonwovens have extremely fine fiber diameters but are not strong fabrics. SMS fabrics, made completely from PP are water-repellent and fine enough to serve as disposable fabrics. Melt-blown is often used as filter media, being able to capture very fine particles. Spunlaid is bonded by either resin or thermally. Regarding the bonding of Spunlaid, Rieter [7] has launched a new generation of nonwovens called Spunjet. In fact, Spunjet is the bonding of the Spunlaid filaments thanks to the hydroentanglement.

Hi Michael,

No problem.

I will wait for the 'ministering angel' who will never show up. :-)

What is worse than not selecting the right/best answer is not recognizing one! (and/or even selecting an incorrect/worse answer instead)

Enjoy your weekend,

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Barend! This is a tricky one, since the patent application also has a list of other, equally trick, specialist terms in it. See e.g.: "In a preferred embodiment said non-woven web is selected from the group consisting of spunbond webs, meltblown webs, flashspun webs, and wet laid webs." After a lot of googling, I have so far decided to leave them in English, as I have seen this done in various places online, as well in other patents. So, the above example would become something like: "In een voorkeursuitvoering wordt genoemd non-woven vlies gekozen uit de groep bestaande uit ‘spunbond’ vliezen, ‘meltblown’ vliezen, ‘flashspun’ vliezen en ‘wet-laid’ vliezen." I have found a few, rather dubious attempts at (literal) Dutch translations, but almost all of them are either on Chinese websites, which looks like machine translations to me, or various ad ridden Wikipedia clones such as https://nl.qaz.wiki/ ...

Asker: Ha ha, and it gets worse. The author then mentions "spunbond-meltblown webs" (SM webs) and "spunbond-meltblown-spunbond webs" (SMS webs). I have never seen a convincing Dutch translation of either of these.

Asker: Thanks for the hyphen tip! I only translate into Dutch in one specific area: patent applications. I wouldn't dare venture outside of this very specific area.

Asker: I wanted to select this as the correct answer, but am not allowed to since I set it to be decided by the community (also just checked with Support). One more Agree and it would be done automatically, I think.
