You're right, of course: nothing to do with 'contreventement', which as you say would only apply in a construction context. Probably closer to a 'jambe de force' (strut)
I would imagine these 'braces' as some kind of 'etai' intended to stiffen up / rigidize the assembly — in which case, it makes sense to also give them an adjustable function.
