I know many application engineers who travel a lot, especially to the customer locations. They meet customers, demo the company products, give them technical insights of the product, help the company in sales, also sometimes does a customer care engineer. The full name of this post is Field Application Engineer. Application engineer should have technical background and knowledge, at the same time he must have very good communication skills. In a long run, he becomes what are called as Solution Architects these days. Application engineer can also get into sales. But he would not have deep insights or understanding of how the product internals are built, but he should definitely have a broader picture. Software engineer’s job is to do the software design by understanding the requirements, , developing the software components by programming it, developing the algorithms, making the design documents, writing unit test cases, conducting unit tests and preparing unit test reports, etc. Basically he builds the software.
