wood vs. timber

I am afraid that every answer will have a counter-example. In the usage I am familiar with, wood(en) house = dom drewniany.
A timber(ed) house in the US is built with large pieces of timbers = belka, bela, for exampe, dom drewniany z bali, dom szkieletowy (the emphasis is on the large structural members).
In the fireplace, one burns firewood or wood. I do not hear of timber as being burnt in the fireplace.
Lumber is an all-encompassing category: a collective term for harvested wood that has been manufactured into boards and planks.
Since it has been dried, it is not good to burn in a fireplace = lots of sparks, but people will burn anything.
