Grinding most commonly involves killing the same set of opponents over and over in order to gain experience points or gold. Although other game genres require some grinding, role-playing games (RPG) – specifically massively multiplayer online role-playing games – are the most notorious for requiring this type of time investment from players.

Z drugiej strony, farmienie jest czasami używane jako synonim grindu, natomiast jest to moim zdaniem błąd. Grind jest używany jako pojęcie ogólne jak na przykład w zdaniu "ta gra to sam grind", gdzie chodzi o to, że w grze trzeba wykonywać cały czas tę samą czynność w celu uzyskania korzyści, zarówno jeśli chodzi o poziom/doświadczenie, ale także walutę czy przedmioty. To oznacza, że farmienie to tylko część grindu.
Zazwyczaj pojęciem farmienia określa się zdobywanie właśnie przedmiotów/waluty w grze, w przeciwieństwie do tzw. ekspenia, które tyczy się zdobywania doświadczenia.
W języku graczy, grind/grindowanie często też używane jest w formie czasownikowej - grindować, jak w zdaniu "Zaspałem na zajęcia, bo wczoraj całą noc grindowałem arenę". Oznacza to, że ktoś wczoraj długo grał arenę, ponieważ chciał zdobyć określone przedmioty bądź doświadczenie.

Yes  Karolina Kopczyńska-Rojek: Funkcjonuje na porządku dziennym wśród profesjonalnych graczy i w serwisach branżowych, raczej nie doczekało się zgrabnego ekwiwalentu, który wszedłby do użycia. "Ekspić" można przez luźną godzinkę - "grind" ma konotacje większego zaangażowania.
