Подскажите, как лучше перевести фразу?

Asker: В том-то и дело, что всем известный стандартный перевод этой фразы, который вы привели, здесь НЕ подходит... Поэтому и вопрос задала.

Коллеги: контекст, контекст, и снова контекст. Это же художественный текст. Что хочет сказать автор? "Отец" здесь негативный или позитивный герой? Если негативный (в церкви проповедует, но дома его боятся), то "его ХОЛОДНОЕ присутствие" ("вездесущ", "всепроникающий" и т.п. не имеют здесь никакого значения; переводим не формы, но смыслы!) Если же позитивный, то можно перефразировать: "Его присутствие почти невидимо; нам знаком его сильный голос в церкви, но дома мы даже не слышим, как он дышит"... что-то в этом роде. Нет времени на перфекционизм, но моя мысль такова: переведите не "точное словосочетание", а смысл; расставляйте именно те акценты и оттенки, которые хочет расставить его величие АВТОР.
