Propongo algo como 'Bien ufano se hallaba', si quieres conservar un tono "antiguo", aunque se perdería el juego de palabras. Se me ocurre algo un poco más arriesgado: 'Vano y ufano', reflejando más fielmente la expresión del original y sin perder el "aire decimonónico".
