French term or phrase: vol d'initiation
The complete phrase is "Contrôle de la circulation aérienne, vol d’initiation en monomoteur" and this characterizes a particular training program. I am inclined to translate the complete phrase as "Air traffic control, single-engine introductory flights," but I would appreciate some input on this. Thank you! :)

According to the pilot, during cruise flight, the engine sputtered twice, then went quiet. The fuel selector was on the left tank, so he switched to the right tank and attempted a restart.

trial lesson

Explanation:
French flying clubs offer a couple of types of flights for newbies - baptism flights (discovery flights) and initiation flights. A baptism flight is where the pilot is the only one who has control, whereas an initiation flight allows duel control - pilot and student. The difference is explained here https://www.baptemedelair.fr/blog/bapteme-versus-initiation.... .

In the UK we tend to call the 'vols d'initiation' , 'trial flights' as these are the short, initial flights you would take with an instructor where you have an amount of control of the aircraft. It can also count towards your total number of hours training that you need for your license.

Should have put 'trial lesson/trial flight'

Example sentence(s):
  • For those considering learning to fly, we offer trial lessons where you’ll take the controls under the watchful eye of an instructor.

Discovery flight is definitely not the way we pilots speak of ou first flight for type rating. I thought I had given you enough to choose. This discussion should be helpful nevertheless.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you. However, I agree with Phil and Suzie. The phrase “maiden flight,” like “maiden voyage,” usually refers to the first flight or voyage of a particular craft. It does not usually refer to the pilot. (Of course, “maiden flights” and “maiden voyages” have pilots and captains, so the term can be extended to pilots and captains.) In any case, in the present context, I do not think “maiden flight” is the right translation. The references are simply not convincing. In the Pinterest reference, there should be a full stop between “maiden flight” and “Pilot Training” because “maiden flight” is a part of the headline and “Pilot Training” is a part of the subheading. In the second case, the reference is in support of the translation “first flight pilot training,” not “maiden flight pilot training.” In the third case, I do not see how the reference justifies support for translation “vol d’initiation” => “maiden flight” In the fourth case, I do not find the term “first flight” or “maiden flight” in the reference provided. I have decided to go with the translation of “discovery flight” since this made the most sense on the basis of the translation context and references provided. Thank you for your suggestions and comments.

discovery flight/trial lesson/introduction/introductory flight

Explanation:
Hi Michael,

Just for info and for anyone looking in the future.

A "discovery flight" is often a short flight given as a gift or even a sightseeing tour. It probably wouldn't be the name for lesson one of a course - and almost certainly not a commercial one - but it doesn't mean you can't then go on to do more lessons afterwards.

The instructor will do most of the work and the person having the discovery flight will probably get to have a go on the controls. To me, it's always been more of a one-off flight, but that's just my personal feeling.

https://www.southwarwickshireflyingschool.com/discovery.html
we shall be pleased to schedule you in for a half hour 'Discovery Flight' which will cost you just £83.50p. A handy accompaniment to the flight would be to include the purchase of a small 64 page colour illustrated booklet labeled The Introductory Flying Lesson which guides you through all you need to know about the first flight, including important information on continuing on to train for your licence and a logbook entry sheet to log your first lessons.

A "trial lesson" is similar to the discovery flight. I don't think there's much difference. You can count the flight time towards your hours.

https://www.morayflyingclub.com/store/trial-lesson-cessna-17...
Trial Lessons are training flights and may count as training time towards a course of pilot training, so this may the first step on your way to gaining a Pilot’s Licence!

"Discovery flight" and "trial lesson" work well on their own but as part of a longer course or in a course description they don't work as well because they imply that you might not continue the course.

An "introductory flight" would work well in the context of a full training course. It pretty much means the same as the other two expressions. "ATC; Introduction to single-engine flying" could work for you.

A "baptismal flight" is used on the continent (in FR and IT, for example) for your first experience in an aircraft but not in the UK and not in a training course.

A "maiden flight" (in the UK) refers to the first flight of an aircraft. It does not
(in the UK) refer to an individual's first flight in an aircraft.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maiden_flight
The maiden flight, also known as first flight, of an aircraft is the first occasion on which an aircraft leaves the ground under its own power. The same term is also used for the first launch of rockets.
