French term or phrase: point sur une sinusoïde
Il n'existe pas d'image de cet astre, car les télescopes actuels sont incapables de la photographier, encore une fois, Gliese 581 g, c'est un point, un point sur une sinusoïde.

Hi everyone,

Could you please help me translate this phrase. It comes from an article about Gliese 581g, a reportedly habitable exoplanet.

I know that a "sinusoïde" is a sine curve, I was just wondering whether anyone can tell me the relevance, please?

Many thanks!

English translation:a point on a curve
Explanation:
The "point" of this somewhat flowery language is that the planet itself is not directly visible. As it orbits its star, it makes the star "wobble" (see reference below) and, by observing this wobble, scientists can determine its likely mass and position. If there was only one planet, this wobble would be a sine wave (in fact, it is a complex curve created from multiple sine waves of different amplitudes and frequencies - one for each planet).
