Hello. This is apparently part of a BSC (biological safety cabinet), but I can't find its equivalent in EN.

In the instructions for use, "On doit maintenir dégagées les grilles de reprise d’air et la veine de garde."

Any ideas?

It basically refers to the space below the front screen, where air filtered air is drawn into the safety cabinet. This ensures a flow of filtered air over the work surface and ensures no contaminants/toxic elements are drawn from the worksurface towards the operator
