This is the title of a subject during the foundation year at Marseille's "Ecole superieure d'art et de design publique"

This is the full title of the course. All the other subjects are art-based or theoretical studies on artistic topics, apart from one for foreign languages.

I don't think this is a subject, it's a personal quality that counts towards the course marks. The word "engagement" appears numerous times on the course programme:

Si le rendez-vous donne lieu à des crédits, c’est l’engagement et l’assiduité de l’étudiant·e dans cet exercice (au regard de ses propres productions comme de celles des autres) qui seront évalués.

"Capacité de synthèse" is literally "ability to synthesise" information", which is another possible translation - I've gone for something more concise.
