Les systèmes de vêtages et de vêtures appartiennent à la grande famille du mur-manteau qui regroupe l'ensemble des procédés d'isolation par l'extérieur (ITE). Mais à la différence d'un bardage rapporté qui est mis en place sur une ossature secondaire bois ou métallique, ces produits sont mis en œuvre directement sur la paroi du bâtiment. Soumis aux contraintes climatiques (soleil, pluie, vent, etc.), ils ont d'abord pour fonction la protection de la structure, dans le neuf comme en rénovation.
