French term or phrase: l’interaction entre les facteurs susmentionnés
Hi everyone,

I'm translating a report about wind turbines and biodiversity. I'd like to get away from using the word "interaction" in the English, if possible. I feel that my current translation sounds stilted.

ST phrase in context:
"Ici, l’environnement du projet éolien comprend à la fois :
• la biodiversité, particulièrement les espèces (végétales et animales) et habitats protégés ;
• les terres, le sol, l’eau, l’air et le climat ;
• les biens matériels, le patrimoine culturel et le paysage ;
• la population et la santé humaine ;
• l’interaction entre les facteurs susmentionnés."

Current translation:
"...The interaction between the aforementioned factors."

A possible alternative could be "Or a combination of the above factors". In this case, I would not precede the phrase with a bullet point. But would that stray too far from the meaning of the original?

Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

The interplay between the above-mentioned factors

Explanation:
Interplay is a synonym for interaction - according to the Collins English dictionary (see example sentences below).

NB: I am personally not too keen on 'aforementioned', it is quite stilted in English and you are more likely to find it used in very formal contexts. I prefer 'above-mentioned', which would work well in your translation.

Example sentence(s):
  • The personal interplay between great entertainers and a live public
  • The interplay of political, economic, social and cultural factors

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks for the comment about "aforementioned" - I agree that it's best to change it to something else. Perhaps "the above factors".

the interaction between these factors

Explanation:
There's nothing wrong with "interaction" - it's "aforementioned" that makes the sentence stilted.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks for your comment. Indeed, "aforementioned" doesn't help, which the discussions here have helped me to realise.

interdependencies, interdependent, interdepending, influencing, etc.

Explanation:
Four basic assumptions of interdependence theory
1. The principle of structure (the situation)
All interactions are set within the context of their given situation (known in Interdependence theory as structure). In order to best analyze this factor, Interdependence theory presents a taxonomy of situations that includes the six dimensions listed below.

Systems thinking is the ability or skill to perform problem solving in complex system. System theory or systems science interdisciplinary study of systems in which System Thinking can be learned. A system is an entity with interrelated and interdependent parts; it is defined by its boundaries and it is more than the sum of its parts (subsystem).

Either 'the interdependencies between the factors mentioned above'
or 'interdependent factors'
or 'a.m. factors interdepending to each other'
or 'influencing each other'

the inclusion of the above factors in conjunction

Explanation:
The environmental project includes all of the following factors or elements concurrently:
biodiversity and protected habitations,
land, ground, air and climate,
natural resources, cultural heritage and countryside or landscape,
population and human health.

'Conjunction is the act of joining, state of being joined, embodying a union or combination, a joint or simultaneous occurrence, concurrence.'

The project's environment is at best when the coinciding elements are considered inclusively.

Habitations could incorporate housing for human people, and not only include the natural homes of animals and plants, which, according to the source text are considered as something worth protecting. The definition of habitats in French is very similar to the definition of habitations.

disagree  Gordon Matthews: If using the word "conjunction", it should read: "conjunctions of the above factors". But "interplay", "interaction", or "interrelationships" would be better. Your explanation includes a serious error. It should be "habitats", not "habitations".
