French term or phrase: (veiller à) la productivité de nos frais fixes
This is the editorial of the employee magazine of a Belgian construction group.

Pour maintenir notre compétitivité, nous devons veiller à la productivité de nos frais fixes et continuer à miser sur l’excellence opérationnelle qui vise à réduire les coûts de carence. Cette approche innovante qui bannit les déchets sous toutes leurs formes est au cœur de notre stratégie durable et nous protège face à des crises comme celle que nous vivons.

Profitability of our overheads?? No idea what that means and can't find good support for it. It's a guess, but could it be interpreted as "streamline our overheads"?

I wasn't actually asking about veiller à, which is why it's in brackets. Just thought it may be relevant depending on what the rest meant. Thanks, everyone!

neutral  writeaway: where does optimize come into it?/sounds better but at the cost of taking the meaning away from what the French says
8 hrs
-> I think "optimize" sounds better simply because it doesn't suffice for fixed costs to be productive only by "monitoring" or "ensuring".

agree  SafeTex: I think it's okay with optimize as there is no point in just monitoring anything if you don't take corrective action when things go wrong

neutral  philgoddard: "Veiller à" is more active than simply monitoring, which is "veiller sur". http://dictionary.reverso.net/french-english/veiller à It means to ensure.
