Jusqu’à cette date, le territoire, au confluent de la Seine et de la Marne, est un secteur de Maisons-Alfort, composé de terres peu fertiles et fréquemment inondées par les deux cours d’eau. Cette configuration, a priori défavorable, le met en marge de sa commune de rattachement.

The municipality or township to which it belongs. For once the French formulation is concise... I guess that they are saying that before 1885 it was attached to Maison-Alfort (sa commune de rattachement) and was not highly regarded.
