agree  Carol Gullidge: yep! as already mentioned, the FR "mangrove" = "mangrove swamp" in EN, ruling out mangrove swamp as a possible translation for arrière-mangrove. Meanwhile, the French term for what we call a mangrove (tree/shrub) is apparently manglier or palétuvier.

neutral  Barbara Cochran, MFA: Your supporting entry (mangrove swamp) just repeats my own./Bu "mangrove", like I mentioned above, is a tree-like plant.

  -> it's not my supporting entry. it just shows what the English is if one only looks up mangrove, omitting the word arrière

agree  Charles Davis: Yes; "arrière" is not mere decoration.

  -> Thank you, nj.

disagree  Carol Gullidge: your citation from wordreference - where it's translated as "back-mangrove" - by no means corroborates this. In fact, the French word "mangrove" means "mangrove swamp", so arrière-mangrove has to be something else//So? sorry, I don't get your point
1 hr
  -> Except that there is a "front de mar", and swamps are located close to bodies of water, rivers, etc.

disagree  Daryo: http://www.universalis.fr/dictionnaire/arriere-mangrove/
7 hrs

neutral  Juan Jacob: No swamps in mangrove.
8 hrs
  -> "Mangrove", in this case, is an adjective, not a noun.

Reference information:
The word is used in at least three senses: (1) most broadly to refer to the habitat and entire plant assemblage or mangal,[3][page needed] for which the terms mangrove forest biome, and mangrove swamp are also used, (2) to refer to all trees and large shrubs in the mangrove swamp, and (3) narrowly to refer to the mangrove family of plants, the Rhizophoraceae, or even more specifically just to mangrove trees of the genus Rhizophora.
