Here, we are translating from the French, where "mangrove" is strictly a noun that translates into EN as (two words): "n.f. MANGROVE SWAMP"

So, whether or not the word is used as an adjective or a noun in English is totally irrelevant. The translation needs to incorporate both "mangrove swamp" and the translation for the word "arrière".
I still fail to see why you think "front de mer" (or "mar", as you call it) is relevant to the translation of the French term "mangrove" or how it might account in any way for "arrière"!

A mangrove is a tree-like vegetation, which this time, grows in an area that borders the sea (front de mar), so not at all far-removed from it. Hence my translation, "mangrove swamp".

My comment was never meant to imply anything about swamps except that they are usually located next to bodies of water, just like most people are aware of, anyway.

Why are you trying to turn this into such a big deal?

while these do appear in saline lagoons, etc., in coastal areas (at least, that was my experience while living in Lagos, Nigeria), this does not mean that all tropical coastal areas are necessarily covered in or surrounded by mangrove swamps. In other words, a "front de mer" by no means implies that there has to be a swamp nearby, as I believe your reply to my comment suggests.

Carol Gullidge: yep! as already mentioned, the FR "mangrove" = "mangrove swamp" in EN, ruling out mangrove swamp as a possible translation for arrière-mangrove. Meanwhile, the French term for what we call a mangrove (tree/shrub) is apparently manglier or palétuvier.
