I am having difficulty understanding the difference between 'échantillons de carottes' and 'sondages carottés'. I thought they both referred to 'core samples' but obviously not! Can somebody explain this to me please?

neutral  Tony M: I think you'll find that the distinction being made here is between a 'carotte' (= core sample) and an 'échantillon' which is a sub-sample taken therefrom.

agree  Claude B: most likely although the wording in french is indeed a bit unclear. There are also "sidewall cores" that are taken in the walls of a well but I don't think that's what is meant here.
