Given the context in conjunction with 'beneath' and 'plateau' I think that 'steep (wooded) edge' works here. A plateau being a raised area of flat terrain, the 'edge' is already going to have the sense of a drop-off but it needs 'steep' to give the full sense of 'corniche'. I think 'cliff' is harder to work in smoothly. |
