French term or phrase: entreprise fantôme
Stentrode

This is from a text reviewing advances in technology and imagining how they might be used in eduction, or what implications they might have for education. "Quoi ?" and "L'intérêt ?" are repeated each time. This is the entire entry for the "Stentrode".

Most of the entries so far have been fairly straightfoward. However, I am a bit stuck here as the usual translation of "ghost company" does not seem to make sense in this context. Any comments welcome.

English translation:the ghost in the machine
Explanation:
I must admit I don't know why they say "entreprise", but I think my suggestion fits the context perfectly.

'The "ghost in the machine" is British philosopher Gilbert Ryle's description of René Descartes' mind-body dualism. Ryle introduced the phrase in The Concept of Mind (1949)[1] to highlight the view of Descartes and others that mental and physical activity occur simultaneously but separately.'

Ryle uses the term disparagingly of the idea that there's a little man sitting inside our heads and operating the levers that control us. He rejects the dualism of mind and body.

shadow company

Explanation:
Termium also gives other terms but shadow company is the one I am most familiar with.

It does make sense to me. A shadow company would be ever more efficient as as tool to whitewash money without any scrupulousness if it were guided by a machine.
