German term or phrase: Brenne/Heißlände
Hello everyone!

Context: a list with habitats in a section of the lower Drava river in Croatia, in a river restoration concept written by an Austrian company.
"Heißländen innerhalb der ausgedehnten Aubereiche mit trockenheitsangepassten Arten."

Now, I've found that "Heißlände" is a specifically Austrian term for German "Brenne", both meaning a sort of dry grassland on thin, gravelly soil, usually within a river area. I've also found a closely related habitat called "Schottersteppe", which would be easy to render as "gravel steppe." While close, the two habitats are however not identical. Neither term is in the EU Habitats Directive Annex I.

In a pinch, I'd go with "gravel steppe within a river area."

Do you have any suggestions?

SCHRATT-EHRENDORFER L., 2000: History and present situation of xeric alluvial biotopes along the Danube near Vienna (Lobau).
The historical development since 1860 and the present situation of xeric alluvial biotopes along the Danube southeast of Vienna are compared and the successional processes documented. The floristic composition of the species-rich xeric alluvial vegetation is described. This vegetation type is important in respect to the conservation of rare and endangered species.

I was hoping that this was a 'shrub-steppe', because that sounds cute, but I think it won't fit any common category. A description followed by '(Heißlände)' or descriptive term already in use would be appropriate. Xeric/dry and alluvial/relating to (nutrient-rich) river deposits cover the key land aspects of the entirety of this habitat.

Thank you! Xeric alluvial is perhaps the shortest possible accurate description of the habitat. The descriptions in your excellent sources seem to match the patch in question as well.

steppe (steppic) grassland

Explanation:

Sub-Pannonic steppic grasslands
Steppic grasslands, dominated by tussock-grasses, chamaephytes and perennials of the alliance Festucion vallesiacae and related syntaxa. These xerothermal communities are developed on southern exposed slopes with AC-soils on rocky substrate and on clay-sandy sedimentation layers enriched with gravels. They are partially of natural, partially of anthropogenic origin.

The region your text refers to (river Drava in Croatia) is described as: steppe grassland
Site Bistrinci (in Slavonia, on the right bank of the Drava river) is a complex of pastures - one of the last steppe grassland in Croatia. It was used for grazing horses and partly mowed, nowadays maintained by fire. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are holocene aeolian sands. It is a lowland along the river Drava. Presence of deflationary processes. Dominant soil is luvisol on marl.

Notes to answerer
Asker: I'm afraid the translations for Magerrasen are not specific enough, but "dry grasslands on (alluvial) gravel or sand banks" is a good description of the habitat, thank you.
