A portál rendszerű futóműveknél a féltengelyek nem közvetlenül csatlakoznak az agyhoz. A "mezei" autóknál egyszerű a dolog: a féltengely végén ott ül a kerék és forgatja, tehát a féltengely a kerék középvonalában van. A portálhíd esetén a féltengely nem középen érkezik, hanem felfelé vagy lefelé eltolva. Éppen ezért nem is közvetlenül forgatja a kereket, hanem van egy fogaskerékáttétel, azon keresztül tekeri. Terepjárók, munkagépek esetén a tengely a kerék középvonala fölött fut, hogy nagyobb legyen a szabad magasság, ne koppanjon le a differenciálmű. Alacsonypadlós buszokon viszont fordított a helyzet: ott a tengely a kerekek középvonala alatt fut, hogy a busz padlóját a tengelyek vonalában se kelljen megemelni, elférjen alatta a hajtás.
