Explanation:
Fermented milk products are made all over the world. Finding linguistic equivalencies is made difficult by the variations in processes and fermenting agents used. (I've tried many times to duplicate rømme in my kitchen over here. But the result is like what my father used to say about another beverage: "Whoever named it 'near beer' was a damn poor judge of distance.")

"Buttermilk" has two meanings, as you'll see in the chart at the reference link below. One of these is equivalent to the Scandinavian soured drinking milk(s) at issue here, as the chart shows. The other one is the traditional byproduct of buttermaking. These days, almost no one knows about the latter, much less has access to it.

"Kefir" is usually denoted as such in my experience and as the chart shows.
