Norwegian to English translations [Non-PRO]
Names (personal, company)
Norwegian term or phrase: Gulbjorn
I'm doing research on my ancestors from norway and my great great grandmother's name was Gulbjorn Hanson. I need to know the rough english translation - and if its related to the english name 'Jenny' - to confirm with census records. Thanks!

Gold Bear

Explanation:
It means literally

Gold Bear, Yellow Bear, Amber Bear, Honey Bear

I doubt Jenny is related because the G in Gulbjorn is a sharp G rather than a dj sound as in Jenny.

This is my own opinion: There is a long gap in sound and no similar meaning from Gulbjorn to related names to Jenny such as Guinevere.

Names that might relate to the Gul part are:
Golda, Goldie, Goldiva etc

For the Bjorn part (for a boy):
Bern, Bernie etc

But that's really just a long shot.

Bernadette and Nadette are couple of female derivatives of (Gul)bjorn. See the link above for other related names.

http://www.norskenavn.no doesn't list gulbjorg, but suggests that the gul part could be a derivative of gud/(god or good in English) i.e. God's bear or even as the website suggests for bjorn "the big brown animal" instead of bear.

It's also very likely that your relative could have changed her name to one she liked rather than one that sounded the same or had the same meaning if it was changed at all.
