This came up at a course I had teaching English to Norwegians who train people from various professionals to become teachers in their field. We were not completely satisfied with "coping"; "managing" or "mastering". Anybody out there with a psycho- background who can help with the professional term?

Although this is not my area of speciality, I think you should try a search for "mestring" and "self-efficacy". You will find a lot of authoritative sources that translate this with "self-efficacy". "Skolebaserte programmer med hensikt å fremme sunne kostvaner hadde en liten, men signifikant effekt på matvanene til elevene. Både kunnskapsnivå, atferd og selv-mestring (”self-efficacy”) ble positivt påvirket gjennom programmene."

agree  Per Bergvall: Coping is also quoted as a synonym in the asker's own reference - http://www.skur.no/dok/skur/notater/2001_06.doc. Qualify with "Coping easily" or "Coping effectively" to avoid overtones of coping only just.
