Tredjevariabel, betegnelse på en mulig faktor som kan forklare at to observerte variabler samvarierer. Hvis en forsker påviser at det er en samvariasjon eller korrelasjon mellom trimming og helse, kan dette fortolkes som at trimming fører til bedre helse, alternativt at det å ha god helse gjør at man er mer tilbøyelig til å trimme. Dette kalles retningsproblemet. Men i denne situasjonen er det også tenkelig at vi har å gjøre med en faktor som ikke er målt, for eksempel helsebevissthet, som kan bidra til å forklare både at man trimmer og har god helse.
