In a more generous mood today, I feel we should allow access to the terminology query feature to basically all and sundry. There should be a tick feature for 'I am a professional translator', and Kudoz answerers should be able to opt-out of these questions when unticked. The next time I get a question from someone who isn't in dire need of assistance, just curious, I will know it's because I have done something silly with my options. Seriously, this is about how we use each other's time. On occasion, I have spent hours researching a single word on behalf of a colleague - a word for which he or she is paid 14 cents on a good day, and I am paid nothing. And I don't even know if there are fellow translators doing the same free research in parallel. To keep Kudoz from becoming a colossal waste of time, we should strive to keep it serious.

as i already mentioned it's just a simple phrase from the film i'm working on, the film is in italian but 2 norwegian phrases appear in it, i don't speak any norwegian that's why i posted so stupid question.. had no idea about the meaning... and it's already too much if i wrote it in a right way (hope i did at least that) The next time i will search for help somewhere else, to bother professional translators with this kind of silly things wasn't my intention for sure... sry

Of course you are right, Per - the use of Kudoz should be tigthened quite a few ticks. As you know, this topic is more or less constantly up for discussion in the forums, but no one seems able to actually do whatever is needed.

This much said, I found this particular question to have a degree of cuteness strong enough for me to answer. Far worse is the trend of five-centers barely capable of spelling their own name, asking 'real' questions here which could obviously be solved by themselves, given the combination of a little brain and a network connection. By providing these with proper answers, we undermine the market. I, for one, have simply decided to stay away from offering my time and effort to respond to those.

On another note, you are probably aware that you and I this instant are breaking the Kudoz rules by discussing this here, and we might be subject to rather harsh punishment for that?

Maybe I'm less understanding than I should be, but isn't this a portal/forum for translators? What translator on this planet needs assistance with 'see you again'? Should we allow or condone this frivolous use of the site?
