must: expresses an obligation
can: expresses a possibility

When somebody says, “você não pode deixar de ir a tal lugar”, he/she is simply stating an impossibility along with an implicit suggestion to go to the place. There is no obligation involved. The person is free to go or not to go. Please note that the sentence is in the negative. It makes no sense to shift it to the declarative form. This may change the meaning. The change of meaning also depends on the choice of modal. [See "Modal Usage (2)" below, with references.] There is a considerable difference in meaning between "must" and "can". The former implies an obligation; the latter, a possibility. If I hear “você não pode deixar de ir a tal lugar”, I take it as a suggestion, not an obligation! I go if I want to. Each modal expresses a different degree of forcefulness.

The degree of forcefulness becomes even more apparent when we throw in other modals. From the strongest to the weakest:

You must see this movie. (have to)
You should see this movie. (or ought to, more formal)*
You can’t miss this movie.
You may want to see this movie.
You might want to see this movie.

* “ought to” vs. “must" - "To say that one ought to take a certain option is merely to provide a nudge in that direction. Its typical uses are to offer guidance, a word to the wise..., to recommend, advise... In contrast, to say that one must take a certain option is to be quite forceful. Its typical uses are to command, decree, enact, exhort, entreat, require, regulate, legislate, delegate, or warn. (McNamara 1990: 156)”
