Capela de S. Miguel
Iniciada a sua edificação pelo Infante D. Pedro, no segundo quartel do século XV, substituiria o primitivo templo pré-românico, sendo-lhe acrescentada nova cabeceira, que quase duplicaria o seu tamanho, a partir de 1507, segundo projecto de Boitaca. Desta intervenção, que lhe emprestaria, em boa parte, a configuração actual, avultam como traços mais impressivos o portal e as altas janelas que o enquadram, o arco triunfal e as abóbadas do cruzeiro, sendo a cabeceira reformada no exterior, em 1544, já ao gosto renascentista, por João de Ruão, em virtude da ruína da abóbada da capela-mor. No interior merecem destaque o sumptuoso revestimento azulejar, o magnífico retábulo-mor maneirista, de Bernardo Coelho, com pinturas de Simão Rodrigues e Domingos Vieira Serrão e o órgão barroco, decorado por Gabriel Ferreira com pinturas de chinoiseries.

O termo arquitectónico cabeceira designa, numa igreja ou principalmente numa catedral com orientação Oeste-Este, o conjunto das áreas situadas a Este (o lado oposto à fachada principal - a cabeça do corpo de Cristo numa planta em cruz) quando vistas do exterior (abside + deambulatório + capelas radiantes).

Em igrejas de planta mais simples é comum visualizar-se do exterior somente uma abside, mas em construções mais complexas, como nas catedrais góticas francesas, o remate após o coro pode ser de tal modo complexo, com arcobotantes e diversos elementos decorativos a fazer a interligação, que se torna difícil distinguir as diferentes componentes do todo. A este remate, como peça única, dá-se o nome de cabeceira.

The Chapel of the University is dedicated to S. Miguel. Successor to the original pre-Romanesque church, it was built by Prince Pedro, in the second quarter of the 15th century, its apse being significantly rebuilt and enlarged after 1507, following plans by Boitaca. Signs of these changes, which were to leave it with its current configuration, can be seen in the impressive design of the portal, the triumphal arch and the vaulted ceiling of the crossing arch. The external apse was rebuilt again (after the vaulted ceiling of the chancel collapsed) in 1544, under the direction of João de Ruão, which gave it its existing Renaissance character.
