agree  Diego Puls: maar dan wel in de betekenis van scheepsbeschuit = harde, slechts eenmaal gebakken beschuit die lang bewaard kan blijven en als proviand op zeereizen werd gebruikt (Grote Van Dale)

Volgens mij is het gewoon koekje. Ik zie niets in de tekst waaruit zou blijken dat koekje geen goede vertaling zou zijn. Ik neem aan dat ze iets met granen maakten, een soort koekjes, maar geen brood.

Ik weet dat ze toastjes ook galletas noemen in Latijns-Amerika.
Dus niet zoet, maar zout.
