Spanish term or phrase: Cuenca del Plata
In the context of a paper on ichthyology, I need to find the best translation for "Cuenca del Plata". I've found "Río de la Plata Basin", "La Plata River Basin", "La Plata Basin" and "River Plate Basin". In some cases, there's no consistency in the texts I've read. In hydrogeological papers I've translated it mostly as "Río de la Plata Basin" and I've used Google Scholar to check frequency of use. Which is the best option in your experience? The paper is going to be published in an international journal and the origin of the paper is Argentina. Thanks!

River Plate Basin
Explanation:
After looking at a couple of international studies its seems that in official British English the basin is referred to as the River Plate Basin, yet is often referred to as the Plata River Basin in other English speaking countries. However, in academic journals, the most common translation seems to be the River Plate Basin (i.e. the offical British English transation). I list a couple of examples.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your input! I'd like to say that all of the researchers I've talked to in Argentina prefer the translation "Río de la Plata Basin", but that they agree that the answer you suggest is widespread in the literature. Thanks!

Rio Plata Basin/Watershed

Explanation:
Plata is the name of the river. I wouldn't translate it.

neutral  neilmac: Watershed is nice, but it has been River Plate in English since before I was at school half a century ago.
