(the rock of the) gallery walls Explanation: According to this Spanish English dictionary of mining terms, 'Cajas' = Walls https://forgottenbooks.com/es/download/SpanishEnglishDiction... Page 364 of 378 in this mining dictionary, Diccionario Técnico de Mineros y Petroleros, "wall rock, rocks (mining), caja, roca caja" https://www.u-cursos.cl/usuario/cdb8b154d7c215025cd0c10087be... This article UNDAC INTRODUCCION A LA MINERIA has a diagram and describes 'cajas' as follows "CAJAS O HASTIALES Son las caras laterales de las labores horizontales. Enel caso se las lumbrerasy los piques verticales las cuatro caras laterales sedenominan hastiales" The same document describes 'galerías' as "GALERIA (DRIFT) Es una labor horizontal sobre o paralela de la veta, generalmente de menor sección que el socavón, abierta en el interior mina y quesigue la dirección de la veta,es para probar la existencia del mineral" The mining terms dictionaries above also define "Galería - Gallery : drift" "drift (n) (mining) - galería, [Co] guía, labor (excavación) en paralelo del cuerpo mineralizado (vena, veta, filón, manto o capa)" So, I would say that 'cajas de las galerías' means (the rock of the) gallery walls or drift walls. In the Diccionario Técnico de Mineros y Petroleros it also lists "safety bay (mining) - refugio, nicho de seguridad, frontón hecho en las cajas de las galerías con el propósito de proteger al personal, que transita por una galería por la cual circulan vehículos" which would seem to back this up. There is a distinction between drift and gallery in English - "Drift - A horizontal passage underground. A drift follows the vein, as distinguished from a crosscut that intersects it, or a level or gallery, which may do either." http://www.coaleducation.org/glossary.htm However, as a gallery can also be a drift, but a drift isn't always a gallery, then (if I had to choose) I would go for gallery over drift.
