Don Francisco había venido por entonces a Manila para ponerse en contacto con ciertos elementos del Katipunan, y refería que para poder leer il "Noli" tenía que despertarse hacia la medianoche, y a la luz de una lámpara de aceite, cuya llama procuraba atenuar con una pantalla de cartón para que ni la más tenue claridad llamase la antención desde fuera, abría las páginas una a una, con la reverencia e unción con que se coge una reliquia santa. Una noche a punto estuvo, así lo creía él, de correr una suerte aciaga.
