English to Dutch: New book tells stories of suffering and resistance from Iran’s female prisons

In the book, Mohammadi also tells of her own experiences in prison, including time in the solitary cell and interrogations. As she details, the interrogators usually had all the information they needed, but still demanded she declared resignation from Defenders of Human Rights Center, a group founded by prominent Iranian lawyers including Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi.
Mohammadi, who is also a campaigner against the death penalty, writes in the book:
The solitary cell is not just a location, but a place where all elements concur to make to have the imprisonment impact us. This includes the indifference of doctors towards our pain, blindfolding prisoners, dirty curtains, dead cockroaches on the floor, unfitting prison clothes, and long periods of sitting in interrogation cells.
Each prisoner reacts to the circumstances in a different way. Nigara Afsharzadeh, a Turkmen national given a five-year sentence in 2014 for alleged spying, explains how talking to the ants in her cell helped her cope: “I just wanted to share my cell with another living being,” she says.
Baha’i former prisoner of conscience Sima Kiani says: “I would rather be interrogated than be left alone in a cell.”
The interrogators also use medical and family information to pressure prisoners. Mahvash Shahriari, another Baha’i citizen who spent 10 years in prison, says threats made against her husband and son were “the most difficult” aspects of the interrogations.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British citizen, explains how she was denied medical care in prison, including prescribed medicine.
Christian convert Mary Mohammadi, who served six months in prison for being a member of a house church, tells how guards constantly insulted her, her parents, and her Christian faith. “They would call the church a gambling house,” she says.

In het boek vertelt Mohammadi ook over haar eigen ervaringen in de gevangenis, over de isolatiecellen en de ondervragingen. Ze licht toe dat de ondervragers over het algemeen alles al wisten, maar dat ze toch eisten dat ze officieel terugtrad uit de mensenrechtenorganisatie “Defenders of Human Rights Center” die gesticht werd door vooraanstaande Iraanse advocaten waaronder de winnares van de Nobelprijs voor de vrede Shirin Ebadi.
Mohammadi, die ook campagne voert tegen de doodstraf, schrijft in haar boek:
De isoleercel is niet alleen maar een cel, maar een concentratie van alles wat tijdens de gevangenschap inbreuk op ons maakt. De dokters die ongevoelig zijn voor onze pijn, het blinddoeken van de gevangenen, vieze gordijnen, dode kakkerlakken op de grond, slecht passende gevangeniskleren en het lange wachten in de verhoorkamers.
Elke gevangene reageert weer anders op dezelfde omstandigheden. Nigara Afsharzadeh is een Turkmeense die in 2014 tot een vijf-jarige gevangenisstraf werd veroordeeld op verdenking van spionage. Zij legt uit hoe ze het heeft kunnen redden in haar cel door tegen mieren te praten. “Ik wilde alleen maar mijn cel met een ander levend wezen delen,” zegt ze.
Sima Kiani is aanhanger van het Baha’i-geloof en vroeger ook politiek gevangene geweest. Zij zegt: “Ik werd liever ondervraagd dan alleen gelaten in mijn cel.”
De ondervragers gebruiken ook informatie over de familie of de gezondheid van de gevangenen om ze onder druk te zetten. Mahvash Shahriari die ook deel uitmaakt van de Baha’i-gemeenschap en 10 jaar in de gevangenis zat, vond de bedreigingen die tegen haar man en zoon geuit werden “de moeilijkste” aspecten van de ondervragingen.
De Iraans-Britse Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe legt uit hoe haar in de gevangenis medische zorg werd onthouden, zelfs de haar voorgeschreven medicijnen.
Nadat ze zich tot het christendom bekeerde heeft Mary Mohammadi zes maanden in de gevangenis gezeten omdat ze lid was van een huiskerk. Zij vertelt hoe de bewakers haar constant beschimpten, haar en haar familie en haar christelijke geloof. “Ze noemden de kerk een gokhuis”, zegt ze.
