Source text - English The argument places nominalists who wish to be realist about other theoretical entities of science (quarks, electrons, black holes and such) in a particularly difficult position. For typically they accept something quite like the Quine-Putnam argument[2]) as justification for realism about quarks and black holes. (This is what Quine (1980b, p. 45) calls holding a “double standard” with regard to ontology.)
3. Naturalism and Holism
Although both premises of the Quine-Putnam indispensability argument have been questioned, it's the first premise that is most obviously in need of support. This support comes from the doctrines of naturalism and holism.
Following Quine, naturalism is usually taken to be the philosophical doctrine that there is no first philosophy and that the philosophical enterprise is continuous with the scientific enterprise (Quine 1981b). By this Quine means that philosophy is neither prior to nor privileged over science. What is more, science, thus construed (i.e. with philosophy as a continuous part) is taken to be the complete story of the world. This doctrine arises out of a deep respect for scientific methodology and an acknowledgment of the undeniable success of this methodology as a way of answering fundamental questions about all nature of things. As Quine suggests, its source lies in “unregenerate realism, the robust state of mind of the natural scientist who has never felt any qualms beyond the negotiable uncertainties internal to science” (Quine 1981b, p. 72).
Translation - Dutch Het QP-argument brengt nominalisten, die wel realist zijn wat betreft hun geloof in het bestaan van fysische entiteiten zoals quarks, elektronen en zwarte gaten in zware moeilijkheden. Quine (1980, p.45) merkt op dat zulke houding getuigt van het hanteren van "a double standard" wat de ontologie betreft van de gebezigde entiteiten.
3. Naturalisme en Holisme
Hoewel beide uitgangspunten van het Quine-Putnam onmisbaarheidsargument in vraag gesteld werden is het duidelijk het eerste uitgangspunt dat de meeste steun kan gebruiken. Deze steun komt van de doctrines van het naturalisme en het holisme.
Volgens Quine wordt het naturalisme meestal gezien als de filosofische doctrine die beweert dat er geen eerste filosofie is en dat de filosofische onderneming gelijkloopt met de wetenschappelijke onderneming (Quine 1981b). Hiermee bedoelt Quine dat filosofie niet voorafgaande aan, noch bevoorrecht is ten opzichte van de wetenschap. Bovendien wordt wetenschap, op die manier opgevat (d.w.z. met de filosofie als een gelijklopend deel) aangenomen als het complete verhaal van de wereld. Deze doctrine ontstaat vanuit een diep respect voor de wetenschappelijke methodologie en een erkenning van het niet te negeren succes van deze methodologie als een manier om antwoorden te bieden op fundamentele vragen over de natuur van alle dingen.
Zoals Quine suggereert ligt de bron in "koppig realisme, een sterke geestelijke gesteldheid van de natuurwetenschapper die nooit enige twijfel heeft gehad over de onderhandelbare onzekerheden eigen aan de wetenschap" ( Quine 1981b, p.72).
