Bio

Qualifications:
Electrical Engineer – degree obtained in Portugal, but with 2 years study in
the University of
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa - with subjects
heavily biased towards Mechanics, due to the needs of the Mining Industry. I
also did part of a B.Comm degree through UNISA (South Africa).  I also have a certificate in Computer Science,
mainly programming languages, web design, networks, and database planning and
implementation. Recently, I did a one-month Certificate in Translation in
Medicine.

Work Experience:
several years working for a Portuguese company in Mozambique; this company owned oil
and soap producing plants as well as others for processing cotton and cashew
nuts. I wrote the manuals for training programs for electricians, metalworkers,
lathe operators and other qualified workers. Included in my duties was the
translation of everything that might be of interest for the several factories –
machine manuals, brochures from the makers of new machinery, articles in
scientific Journals and magazines, etc. After returning to Portugal I
worked as a freelance Engineer, but I kept up my translation work, although
always as part of the overall job. At the moment I work as a freelancer. Four
books I translated from the French have been published (“La
visiteuse”, Alphonse Boudard; “Reine par amour”, Geneviève Chaudel; “Le Grand
Maître des Templier”, Inès Nollier; “Le Frère Crapaud”, Chantefable). I have
also translated technical texts in several areas (valves, computer science,
electrical power plants, communications, etc.). I have translated user’s
manuals for an MP3 Jukebox, DVD Readers, digital watches, LCD TV
screens (three of these directly in PDF) and plasma TV screens, part of
the manuals for a hydro electrical power plant, manuals for a finishing cast
iron pieces company, the maintenance manual for a marine elevator, a user’s
manual for an UPS unit and another for an overbelt (transporter). I also
translate subtitles for travel documentaries and I also did some translations
for the TV channels Extreme Sports, Reality TV and Food Network. My latest
translations include several texts from a Conference on Energy and Safety in
Africa, texts regarding the IMO and the ISPS Code, texts about Integrated
Energy Development, the Online Help for an application for chain stores, a
maintenance manual for a paint shop for car parts, a user’s manual for a
satellite receiver, a user’s manual for rescue equipment (hydraulic
ram/cutter/spreader), a user’s manual for a big compressor and another for its
respective electronic controller, instructions for toys (boxes, young
children), several user's manuals for TV sets, DVD players, digital watches and
similar devices, user’s manuals for a paper factory, manuals for a glass
tempering factory, translation of software for sports devices (heart rate
counters for cyclists runners and cyclists, for example), general help texts
for offshore platforms and other translations, technical and general. I have
also done several translations for Microsoft and Google, including Chrome,
Android and YouTube. In French, I translated a Fisherman’s guide (from a fish
processing company)
, a virtual
art gallery, the instruction manual for a pellet mill and several smaller
texts, both technical and general, particularly in traveling and tourism,
including the 2011 catalogue for a company with several organized tours in
Paris and France. I also continue to translate legends for Travel
Documentaries. I have also translated some texts for a cystic fibrosis
association. And I have also adapted technical and general texts from
Portuguese (Brazilian) to Portuguese (European).
