Translation - English Chapter 1
Strangely, my earliest memories date back to the time when I was fifteen years old. On second thought, that’s not accurate. I do recall pictures and events from my childhood and early adolescence, but they are veiled by a fog. I remember pictures of myself, of my mother; I remember the aroma of lentil soup on the stove and the scent of lilac trees in blossom. I remember sections of my childhood home, especially the small balcony lined with flowerpots, where I loved to hide. But when I think back, my most tangible memories, the most colorful and sensual, oh yes, without a doubt- they are the ones that begin with our journey to Harutani, the hidden valley.
My mother and I lived then in Oldgate, the big city. My mother was a botanist at the university. I don’t remember the exact focus of her research, but I remember that it would occasionally lead us to travel to distant locales, to farms situated at the bases of mountains and on mountainsides, with rivers and streams surrounding or crossing them. I frequently accompanied by mother on her expeditions, as she carried a large basket to hold her findings, a magnifying glass, several books, a notepad, and most important -- a heavy camera suspended from her neck by a wide, dark strap. As a child I enjoyed our expeditions, and I understood that there were times when I had to stay quiet and avoid disturbing my mother while she would be inspecting or photographing her findings. Sometimes she would take breaks and teach me about the structure and features of various plants, such as those that grow in symbiosis with bushes and trees, about methods of seed dispersion and more.
Sometimes we would examine and study the various shapes of flower petals. Other times, she would explain to me, in a serious tone, her rationale for choosing specific angles to photograph from, and teach me about light and shadows. Perhaps that was when she first instilled in me the passion for photography.
I knew very little about my father. My recollections of him are vague. In one of them, I was perhaps three years old, he carried me on his shoulders, and I squealed with delight as I drummed with my hands on his head. I remember the view of the ground and the vegetation from afar, from high up, and mainly I recall my mother laughing, again and again, and the sound of her laughter still echoes in my memory like chimes in the wind. I vaguely remember the sound of my father’s voice- deep, quiet, melodious. I remember that he had a pleasant fragrance of scented soap, and his touch was warm and tender. As I grew older, I came to understand that I really didn’t know too much about him, as Mom didn’t speak about him much. The memory of his tragic death was quite painful for her. I knew that he was also a researcher, a zoologist. They had met one another at university, married young, and apparently had many common dreams. I was born into their deep love, so my mother related to me, and they were very happy. Together they planned - and also carried out– joint research expeditions. My mother studied wild vegetation, specifically in forested habitats, while my father studied mammals in all environments, and mainly the deer populations. Sometimes they would take me along, though on most of their ventures, including their final one, they left me with my maternal grandmother. I was approximately four years old, when my mother returned from the journey, and my father was not with her.
I don’t remember the day of his death, though my grandmother told me about it when I got a little bit older. My mother also filled in some details on one of the few occasions in which she spoke about it. I was told that the two of them embarked on a particularly difficult expedition, to a distant locale adjacent to a distant mountain pass, far from any human habitation. They made all due preparations and took with them all the proper equipment. It was my father who had declared the objective of the venture. He had done a great deal of reading beforehand and resolved to find the animal that has not been seen by man for approximately two hundred years, (and there are those who say that the creature is purely fictional): the silver-horned deer. In preparation for his venture my father read and studied many accounts of expeditions and various ancient writings, illustrations and eyewitness accounts. He was convinced that he knew where to find the silver-horned-deer. When my mother wasn’t listening, my grandmother would say, sighing deeply, “He was pursuing a mere myth”, throwing up her hands in a motion expressing futility and deep sorrow.
My mother always believed that the silver-horned-deer exists. The few occasions where I saw my mother incensed were when someone hinted to her that the creature is fictional, and that her husband, my father, died in vain.
And so, they embarked on their journey, not foreseeing the treacherous weather that would suddenly develop as they neared their destination. My father navigated, his binoculars strapped around his neck and shielded from the rain by his coat, and my mother walked behind him, shielding her camera with her raincoat. Beyond the mountain, so my father asserted, stretches the valley in which the deer was last seen. Rocky, steep and winding slopes stood between them and their destination.
To reach the valley by foot, they needed to climb the mountain, and there was only one path that was even barely manageable. From the top of the mountain there was a wide, rocky passage connecting the two mountains, a bridge of sorts, and below it was a river. That was the only possible route. There was no other feasible path.
The river raged furiously with vigorous foamy rapids. The path going down the hill in search of a narrow section of the river was full of twists and turns, and very dangerous. They climbed one of the mountains, as the rain beat down on them, and the winds whipped their faces. My father searched for shelter and described to my mother the way to get to a certain cave that was said to be nearby. They had planned to spend the night in that cave, but visibility was poor, and apparently, they had unknowingly veered somewhat from the course. He looked yonder, but the binoculars quickly became covered with raindrops and it was impossible to see through them. They marched onward sometimes slipping in the mud despite great caution. When they neared the mountain summit, my father rejoiced.
From afar he could see the rocky passage that lead to the valley, but in order to traverse it they would need to climb several more yards along a winding and muddy incline. They climbed for more than three hours, slowly and with great caution, until they reached the rocky pass that formed a sort of bridge, approximately two yards wide, very high above the river. The “bridge” connected the mountain that they were on with the mountain that they needed to reach, from there to descend to the spot where, according to the research literature, the silver-horned deer was last seen.
From this point onward, my mother’s account differs somewhat from that of my grandmother. My mother stated that in the distance they saw the silver-horned deer hurrying into the bushes, perhaps to take shelter from the rain. My father looked through the binoculars, filled with excitement, and then passed the binoculars to my mother. While she was still gazing at the amazing creature, lest he move out of her view, my father got excited and hurried, almost raced, in the footsteps of the deer and began to march too quickly on the bridge, before my mother could call him, and then he slipped, stumbled and fell onto the rocks which protruded from the river’s furious rapids. My grandmother said, of course not in my mother’s presence, that the sight of the deer was nothing but a figment of his imagination. The rest at any rate, was bitter: My mother cried out bitter cries to the wind, the binoculars that my father had used only a moment ago clutched in her hand as a mute witness to what had transpired. No one heard her cries, as there was not a single soul for miles around. She stood there drenched and terrified; her desperate cries swallowed by the roaring of the storm. She wanted to go down after him, but after several failed attempts she thought better of it. She told me that she thought about me and didn’t want to leave me bereft of both parents. She saw my father’s corpse with his arms spread above the large rocks which peeked above the river, and the current pushed him again and again so that it looked for a moment as though he were alive, but she knew that he had not survived the fall. From within her immense pain, she related, that the entire time, in her mind’s eye she could see my face and hear my laughter. It was my image, she related, that preserved her presence of mind, her inner resolution to keep her wits about her, and her ability to think rationally about how to proceed. She sought and found shelter for the remainder of the day and night between the rocks. The next morning the rain stopped, and she retraced her steps, alone. The rain resumed in the afternoon, but she resolved not to stop until it got completely dark. She had barely eaten and was very weak. Fortunately, she discovered shelter in a hidden cave, and there she spent the following night. In the morning she forced herself to eat something before continuing her journey. The trek continued for several days until she reached came close to a populated area, and then the rain resumed, and she found shelter in another cave where they had taken shelter on their way to the valley. The next morning, she went on her way again. Her journey home continued for approximately twelve more hours, in the terrible weather. When her energy was almost exhausted, night had fallen, she saw in the distance the lights of the village and she realized that she was saved, and at the same moment she internalized the realization that her beloved was no longer with her.

To remove any doubt, it is hereby declared, confirmed, and agreed by the Parties that the sale of the apartment according to this Agreement is for the apartment "as is", containing nothing other than the built-in cabinets in the bedrooms, the bathroom fixtures, the kitchen fixtures, the alarm system, the central air-conditioning and heating system, the range hood in the kitchen of the apartment and the rest of the equipment as described in Appendix B of the Agreement, attached to this Agreement as an integral part thereof.
3.3. It is further clarified that Sale of Apartment is subject to fulfillment of obligations by each Party per this Agreement, in their entirety and in a timely manner.
