Source text - German Der neue Chef der österreichischen Brau Union, Magne Setnes, will mehr Beweglichkeit im Produkt-Portfolio des größten heimischen Braukonzerns.
In Zeitungsinterviews bescheinigt der bisherige Heineken-Manager der Österreich-Tochter, viel richtig gemacht zu haben, vor allem kein Einheitsbier gebraut zu haben.
Das will er auch so halten.
Der gebürtige Norweger Setnes ist seit Anfang Jänner 2018 neuer Chef der Brau Union mit Sitz in Linz, wo er den letzten Spross der heimischen Bierbrauerdynastie, Markus Liebl, abgelöst hat.
Setnes ist seit 18 Jahren beim Brau-Union-Mutterkonzern Heineken.
In Österreich will er jeden Betrieb vor Ort auf Stärken und Schwächen prüfen und die Marken durchleuchten.
Liebl hat stets die Marken- und Sortenvielfalt hervorgehoben.
Das will Setnes beibehalten.
"Der Erfolg der Brau Union liegt genau in der Struktur. Da gibt es keine Pläne, das zu ändern.
Ich habe viele Jahre im Heineken-Konzern gearbeitet und Marktanalysen gemacht.
In Österreich wäre es ein großer Fehler, nur eine einzige Brauerei hinzustellen", sagte der Manager in der "Presse".
"Wir sind die Brau Union.
Betonung auf Union."
Ein Einheitsbier wird es demnach mit ihm nicht geben.
"Das wäre wirklich schade.
Meine Braumeister sind alle unterschiedlich.
Die wollen ihren Stempel auf ihrem Bier haben.
Wenn ich sage, jetzt gibt es ein Rezept für alle, wäre morgen Schluss."
Weil die Marken schon sehr präsent sind und der österreichische Biermarkt "stabil", sei das Wachstumspotenzial mit den klassischen Marken eher gering, stellt Setnes in den "Oberösterreichischen Nachrichten" fest.
Großes Potenzial sieht er im alkoholarmen und alkoholfreien Bereich.
Auch Craftbiere machten den Biermarkt lebendig.
"Ich glaube grundsätzlich, dass wir mehr probieren müssen."
Konsumenten wünschten sich immer wieder etwas Neues.
"Nicht jedes Produkt muss zehn Jahre auf dem Markt bleiben", glaubt Setnes.
Mehr Beweglichkeit im Portfolio sei wichtig.
Ein Riesenerfolg der Brau Union sei der "Radler" gewesen. Das Produktionsverfahren sei in vielen Heineken-Brauereien weltweit eingeführt worden.
Der nächste Schritt sei jetzt das Null-Komma-Null-Prozent alkoholfreie Produkt.

In newspaper interviews, the former Heineken manager confirms that the Austrian subsidiary has made many good choices, particularly in shunning the single standard beer. And he plans to keep it that way.
Norwegian native, Setnes, accepted the position of director at Brau Union, located in Linz, in early January 2018, as a replacement for the last descendant of the national beer brewing dynasty, Markus Liebl.
Setnes has been with Heineken, the parent company of Brau Union, for 18 years.
In Austria, he wants to focus on identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each individual plant, and optimising the different brands.
Liebl has repeatedly emphasized the importance of label and brand diversity.
Setnes plans to maintain this outlook.
"The success of Brau Union lies precisely in this structure and there are no plans to change it.
I have worked at and conducted market research for the Heineken group for many years.
It would be a huge mistake to have a homogenised brewery in Austria”, says the manager in “Presse”.
"We are Brau Union.
And the word union is important.”
As such, a single beer brand will not exist.
“It would be a real shame.
All my master brewers are different.
They want to put their own twist on their beer.
If I were to say, from now on we will all have to use the same recipe, it would all be over tomorrow.”
As Setnes points out in the "Oberösterreichischen Nachrichten” (Eng. Upper Austrian News) the growth potential for traditional labels is fairly small, as each individual label is very present on the market and the Austrian beer market, itself, is considered to be “stable”.
However, there is much room for growth in the low-alcohol and alcohol-free sectors.
Craft beers are also bringing a breath of fresh air to the beer market.
“I believe that we generally need to try more.”
Consumers are always looking for the next new thing.
“Not every product has to stick around the market for ten years”, says Setnes.
More portfolio flexibility is important.
The “Radler” (Eng. Shandy) was a huge hit for Brau Union, causing the production method to be introduced in numerous Heineken breweries all over the world.
The next step is said to be the zero-point-zero-percent non-alcoholic product.
