This is what comes to mind in context of the whole conversation.

..."But, he's going to get out, right"
"He's trying, isn't he? He's trying."

Or more literally perhaps:

"He is seeing (if he can do it)"

he's thinking about it/ he's gonna see

I think that looking into it also works, as it maintains the informal and conversational tone of the phrase. While checking/verifying is right, it doesn't seem like something someone would say naturally in a conversation.

I would say that: He's looking into it or He's seeing about it would be two good options for this informal dialogue.

The idea in Portuguese is to deal with a task that needs to be dealt with (or waiting to be dealt with)...that´s certainly the definition of "see to" in Cambridge Adv. learner's Deictionary
