English term

support team

English Social Sciences Psychology parenting
Dear colleagues,
I was thinking about the use of “support team” near the end of the following passage taken from a book on a meditation technique. I’ve seen other questions in Kudoz about this term, but they seem to be related mainly to marketing.
How do you understand “support team” in this case? Do you perhaps know whether there is a specific use in psychology?
Thank you for any hint!

**************

There is no such thing as perfect parenting. In all of my books for parents I try to make this point by noting, sometimes to my own children’s dismay, the many times I’ve messed up in my relationship with them. I also try to describe how in showing up for our kids, we express kindness not only toward them, but toward ourselves as well. This kind regard means being present for the reality that we, too, are simply human. From the plane of possibility, from the hub of the wheel, we can all find that love that empowers us to become our own best friend, *** our own support team. ***

English term (edited): our own support team
Selected

our own best source of [psychological/moral] support in dealing with the difficulties of parenting

The idea seems to be mainly that of developing sufficient emotional maturity to rely on one's own general good judgment - while acknowledging and forgiving one's mistake.

There is an implicit opposition here to an attitude of pervasive self-doubt about one's parenting capacities and unending guilt and torment over mistakes committed.

This, at any rate, is my reading.

"Support team" is apparently used here as synonymous with "support group," a very common term in pscyhogical contexts (especially addiction recovery) in US English. It refers to those persons on whom the affected person can rely for support in dealing with the problem he or she is facing.

“Support group” or - probably more frequently - “support system” is used in the contexts that I mentioned, and that are relevant to your extract.

Example:

Bill is an alcoholic in early recovery whose support system consists of his brother, his best friend Jack, his AA sponsor Bob, and a couple of other persons in his AA group who have gained his trust.
Note from asker:
Thank you so much, Robert, for your valuable help! You seem to have "read my mind", because I also thought of "support group", but I wasn't sure...
Thank you very much, Robert, for this additional information!
