throbbing pain
Your hunch was right- throbbing pain would be the term for "Klopfschmerzen"(most likely indication of an infection); "klopfende Schmerzen" would be an expression that is more frequently used.
"He said it looked fine but said he could do a root canal and that would definitely get rid of any pain. So, I let him do the root canal. Well, I have had nothing but pain since then. I now have sensitivity to hot and cold in the tooth that had the root canal and also a slight throbbing and almost constant pain and soreness."

Comment: "I don't generally like to close questions too quickly, but I'm satisfied that throbbing pain, or pounding pain as Gisela said, are OK. Just needed confirmation, which you guys have now provided. Johanna gets the points for answering first and giving a nice detailed answer, but I'll include Gisela's "pounding pain" in the glossary as well, as that was pretty good too. Many thanks to both of you for your prompt help."
