i hate to bring this up but. . . What do you think as a freelance translator? Alternatives and difficulties are well known.

“Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Vaşington Büyükelçiliği” Web sitesinde “Republic of Turkey” ifadesi kullanılıyor. Dolayısıyla İngilizce’de resmi olarak benimsenen ifade bu. Ancak öte yandan “Turkish Republic” diye bir alternatif var. “Republic of Türkiye” de seçenekler arasında.

Kişisel olarak merak ettiğim, sözgelimi Avusturyalı’lar Fransızların ülkelerine “devekuşu” (autruche / Autriche) dediğini düşünüyor mu?

Very interesting question This was a very interesting question, foghorn.. I first thought that it was quite trivial, then after reading a few Wikipedia pages I realized that this term is often mistranslated !
Anyway, thanks to Constantinos we have the answer now :p

Resmi kullanım budur. Link vermeye bile gerek görmüyorum, Dışişleri Bakanlığı'nın web sitesine bakmanız yeterlidir.

Ama resmi kullanım dışında alternatifler olduğunu unutmamak lazım. Mesela Birleşmiş Milletler'in web sitesinde üye devletler listesinde kısaca Turkey olarak geçiyor. Ayrıca, özellikle basın dilinde Turkish Republic sık olarak karşımıza çıkıyor.

The Unites States of America resmi isim olmakla beraber, the USA, US, Unites States, hatta sadece America olarak kullanıldığını biliyoruz.

Bence esas sorun T.C. kısaltmasını çevirirken T.R. kullanılması, maalesef bunu yapan arkadaşlar gördüm. Doğru olan açık bir şekilde yazmak (ister sadece Turkey veya Turkish Republic, ister resmi kullanım olan the Republic of Turkey).
