For the first time, since I started using Trados 2011, one of my clients has asked me for 'unclean' Trados file. What is an 'unclean' Trados file? What use is it to my customer? Is such a request normal in our industry? Enlightenment most desired and welcome!

It's a file containing both source and target text. Probably the customer wants to edit your translation. This was a normal practice for me when working with translation agencies. One even asked for an uncleaned word file. This meant translating with Trados directly in Word.
