Many, but not too many May 22, 2023

My CAT (Déjà Vu X3) has features that I never use, but that doesn't bother me at all.

Trados has too many features May 22, 2023

I'm confident I'll never get to use all of them. And this feature overload is probably part of what makes it buggy. But I still use it; to be fair, it's not been too mean to me lately. My workflow is predominantly Trados-based, so I only switch to memoQ with really big documents that Trados cannot handle; switching between the two every time creates an additional risk of not being able to export an output file because of some unknown error that may or may not be fixable through QA

Yes, way too many May 22, 2023

Yes - and I use WFC, the simplest of them all.

Studio and Memsource and MemoQ are like jumping into the control room of a spaceship. The steering wheel may be self-explanatory, but the rest… And all I want to do is pop to the corner shop for 20 Benson’s and a copy of The Sun.

Several years ago SDL removed just one redundant feature that upgraded TMs. They didn't even removed it completely, but simply made it a plugin. Since that time, users keep complaining about it even though it relieved the load on Trados.
I don't see any problem with this. You can choose to disable an existing feature, but you can't choose to enable a lacking feature. For example, I disabled upLIFT, no big deal.

No, but May 22, 2023

No, but what does sadden me is that my main CAT tool has a development cycle that regularly flushes less used features from itself, in order to remain "lean and mean". Unfortunately, the developer decides which features are deemed unnecessary or "hardly ever used" and sometimes those features are exactly ones that I use... which means that I can either upgrade to a version that is better and faster and more compatible with modern computers, but which has only newer features, or I can stick to an old version. So far, I've been choosing the latter, and am currently using a version that's nearly a decade old (though my license allows me to use the most recent version, should I choose to). Wordfast Classic. Size on disk: 5 MB. Features removed over the years in order to stay under 5 MB: countless.

memoQ missing a feature I always used in Trados May 22, 2023

In Trados, my coworker and I would send packages to each other to review. Whenever I opened a package, I could see "track changes" to show the difference between their translation and my TM (as well as whatever changes we make during our review, which memoQ also does). This is missing in memoQ, so even though it was a 100% match from something we had translated and reviewed before, we cannot tell at a glance if the translator made changes. So we have to read the whole target segment and compare it with the previous TM to see if they kept it the same or made some change, so we could decide if the change was ok or not. I got the idea of the translator locking the unchanged 98-101% matches, but that didn't help at all.

The only thing memoQ does that helps a little is, you can set it to show IF there is a difference by adding highlighted color to the target. But that only happens if the source is exactly the same. Sometimes it highlights when there are no apparent changes, too, so we still waste time reading it again.

We translate a lot of documents that use a template, so many of the sentences are the same. Many of those sentences are long, too.

Are TM Town integration and Total Recall.

TM Town is really a weird duck.
